The Vanishing Face of Gaia - James Lovelock
With his 1979 publication of GAIA: A NEW LOOK AT LIFE ON EARTH, which stated that the earth is a unified organism made up of parts such as its surface, its atmosphere, and its inhabitants, James Lovelock became known as one of the most innovative, prophetic scientists of the day. In 2009, he is at the forefront once again, though this time he brings more sobering news. With his seventh Gaia-related title, Lovelock becomes one of the first scientists to officially declare defeat in our fight to stop global warming. With compelling scientific evidence, he demonstrates that the human population has already passed the point of no return, and that environmental disaster is imminent. He calls for the immediate preparation of safe havens in isolated areas, which will be necessary to keep humanity safe from Earth's massive oncoming casualties.

Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization - Lester R. Brown
Lester Brown, the author of Plan B 4.0, is the president of the Earth Policy Institute. Plan B 4.0 clearly demonstrates the interconnection among major global problems and proposes an ambitious set of solutions, arguing that we need nothing less than a wartime-type mobilization to, among other things, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2020.  According to Brown, unless we act quickly and decisively, we will soon face a constellation of mutually reinforcing crises from population pressure, climate change, poverty, loss of natural resources, and worldwide hunger.  These problems cannot be effectively understood or addressed in isolation from one another.
